MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the AYYA is to provide a venue for players and collectors to come together in fellowship and to engage in the promotion of YO-YO playing as an art form and a sport, for both amateur and professional players. It is also to render assistance to fellow YO-YO players and collectors; to provide an accessible source of information about YO-YO people and events; to conduct as many competitions as possible across the nation; and to establish uniform standards for running AYYA sanctioned competitions for all levels of skill from the novice to the professional.
So you want to start a yo-yo club? Our success story.
By: David Brunner - AYYA Treasurer
I just wanted to share with everybody my experiences in starting a yo-yo club down here in Florida. In September of 1998, myself and a couple of friends, Josh van Dalen, and Gloria van Dalen, had been talking with each other about starting a yo-yo club for the area. I was really getting into yo-yoing and had just started touring with Yomega/Bandai on the KBee Toys Tour through HPK Marketing and was gaining skill fast.
It was these new tricks that I was learning that showed me that there is more than "Walk the Dog" and "Rock the Baby", which most people knew already but never had heard of such things as "Brain Twister" and "Split the Atom". So we set out to form a yo-yo club.
We first tried to get a room at a local church, but that was difficult getting a room we needed. So we then went to the local parks and recreation department, which has civic centers and community centers throughout the county. Each park had a large meeting room in which to hold our yoyo club. All I had to do was find an open time, and to sign a "hold harmless" agreement so that they would not be liable in case a kid got hit with a flying yo-yo or something. We were then set with a time and a room which was FREE to use !!
I then turned to Pat Miller, the regional director for HPK Marketing, about using the Yomega/Bandai Pro Spinner program at our club. They had levels set out to move up in rank and get onto Team Yomega and onto THP, so we went with their program and were off.
The first few weeks we started out with about 30 members, of which half were from our church friends that we invited. Of course, they then told their friends, and so on before we were up to 50 by 4 weeks. At that point, I called the local newspaper and told them of this great yo-yo club. Well, since nothing like that has ever been in this area, they came out with a reporter and a photographer to get shots of the action. Needless to say, after the article came out in the major Tampa paper, the students started coming in droves!
The club officially started in October of 1998 and by December of 1998 we had over 200 members. At this point, the room we were meeting in only held 185 people so we had to find a larger room. I then went back to the county department and they moved us to the largest room in the county which holds 700 people. Well, for your information, a 700 person room translates into about 200 yo-yo players taking into consideration your yo-yo safety zone. So this room was just perfect for our needs and it had high ceilings too!
As our club grew and more people came, I would randomly do "bring a friend night". If they brought a friend who has never come before, I would give each free yo-yo string. These nights would usually pump up the numbers by 20-30 new members. I would also do fun nights where we would have freestyles to music, guest speakers such as Dennis McBride, Chris Ciosek, Alan Amaral, Alan Nagao, Rick Osborne, Al Hill, and many others including THP Player Dave Shulte. We also played games like 10 person drag racing where you would do runaway dog and the first one across the line won a prize. We also have done light up shows in the dark, mega team demonstrations, skits, any many other fun yo-yo nights to keep the interest up in the club.
Of course with the increasing numbers I had to delegate teaching over to the kids who were at a higher level of skill. The better players would teach the newer players and the cycle of teaching would continue. Currently we have formed 35 Team Yomega players and one THP Player from our club alone. My current membership is over 700 members, but we usually average about 100-125 per week in attendance, which is plenty !
We were fortunate enough to have Yomega/Bandai sponsor our club and give us the trick levels so that the members would have "goals" to achieve. However, there are other companies out there with similar programs. Spintastics has the "Team Spintastics" program in which you earn patches as your skill level increases. What's Next Mfg./BC Yo-yos has a 4 level program now as well where you can make your way onto the Extreme Team using classic wood yo-yos. So as you can see, there are many options for your club.
I encourage anyone who lives in an area where yo-yos are popular, but there is no club to give it a try. It doesn't cost you any money, just time and devotion to share you skills and knowledge with others and to give back what has been given to you.........the joy of yo-yoing.
"The Book of YO By Neil Feser"
A book review by Don "Captain YO" Watson - Charter AYYA Member
The Author: Neil Feser is a high school counselor and author of "Challenging College", a guide for students in planning their further education. Neil has also written creative material for the Smothers Brothers and other artists, and magazine and journal articles. At various times an actor, hypnotherapist, speaker, lecturer, and workshop leader, Mr. Feser is well qualified to write on philosophy, and especially to have created this unique work; The Book of YO.
In the late '80s, the Smothers Brothers did a second period of their television comedy shows. In that series, Tom Smothers emerged as "Yo-Yo Man" with Dick Smothers (straight man extraordinaire) as "The Voice of YO". In that same period Tom Kuhn, well known to yo-yo players for his popular No-Jive 3-in-1 and other great yo-yos, and Tom Smothers came together as the foremost definers and practitioners of the philosophy of YO. Mr. Feser conceived the idea of using history-based fiction to cloak YO in the wisdom of ancient Chinese philosophy. He did that originally with a few pages which were used in a sketch for a Smothers Brothers TV special, again in the late '80s. And here, a decade later, we have the remarkable fruits of his work in his new book - a mind-expanding literary source for Yo-Yo players and all who choose to enjoy. Be aware, this is not a book of yo-yo tricks or yo-yo history.
Tom Smothers provides a Foreword giving us new ways to think about and enjoy "Yo-Yo Man" and his thoughts about the yo-yo - its connections to fun, laughter, and living a happy and rewarding life. Tom Kuhn follows with an Introduction, his early days with the yo-yo, his fascination with the form-and-function beauty of wood in the creation of the toy. Much of the philosophy of YO and some beginning thoughts about the "State of YO" are provided here by Tom and Tom. They are joined on the cover with a few words by their YO friend Dale Myrberg, one of four living recognized National Yo-Yo Master Award recipients.
The body of the book intermixes three literary and graphic elements: sections of prose by the author, sections of verse by "Yo Tzu", and Chinese seals and calligraphy by Steven Jian Chen of the Purple Bamboo Studio, Cypress, CA. The presentation of the seals and calligraphy provide a pleasing environment for the prose and verse. Pleasing to the eye, pleasing to the mind; and so such a book should be.
In "Beautiful Beginnings", Neil presents many thoughts to introduce the "almost spiritual state known as YO" and the philosophy of YO. "What attracts people to stop and join in the fun and fascination of watching a yo-yo trick? Do they seek entertainment or sense something deeper, richer?" Elsewhere, it has been written that mentioning the yo-yo to others invariably brings a smile to the face of the listener. The thread of ancient Chinese wisdom is woven into our considering questions and circumstances of these kinds, and we are introduced to Yo Tzu who may have lived some 300 years B.C.E.; Before the Christian Era. Neil gives us a definition of The State of YO as "that balance point where everything seems to work, fit and flow." It is clear from his text that this applies to performing tricks with the yo-yo and in finding a similar balance point in the complexity of our lives. Powerful stuff. Yo Tzu, the philosopher Neil has created, speaks to us. Hear Yo Tzu's first words:
"In a mountain valley
a yo-yo leaves the hand of a child.
In a hut by the sea
one returns to wrinkled fingers."
In that simple word picture, we learn that the yo-yo brings together the widest range of ages. Child and elder may be apart in distance, but they are together in YO. Is there another toy that does that? Games maybe, but toy? It is in the natural power of the yo-yo to bring together all ages in yo-yo fun, friendship, and mutual learning. And so we begin with Neil Feser and Yo Tzu to learn of The State of YO and more broadly the philosophy of YO.
You are invited to look for more. An example from Neil: "Every day, scientists happen upon newly discovered 'secrets' of the universe. These secrets were not created the day before the discovery. They have waited patiently for our understanding to grow to them." The philosophical point: educate yourself, train yourself, use your education, use your learned skills; solutions to problems will unfold before you, obstacles will disappear. Another example from Yo Tzu:
"The only thing to seek
at the top of a mountain is the
foot of a more beautiful mountain.
Enjoy your mountain."
The philosophical urging: In YO, having learned a new move, a new trick, move on to the next even better move, better trick. Grow. In life, having accomplished, move on to the next task, the next problem. Accomplish. Grow. YO! All the while, remember to grasp as much fun and enjoyment as you can with your friends and associates in what you do with life along the way. These are among those thoughts the book has given me. There are many more for any reader to find.
The book has a prominent place in my library. I hope it finds its place in yours. Happy days!

YO-YO Periodicals
By: John Stangle-AYYA President
There are several ways to learn about YO-YO's. One of the ways is to use the internet and search the search engines for YO-YO pages. Several years ago there were only a hand full and now a good search on the internet will return hundreds of hits.
I have always told people the easiest way to learn about YO-YO's is from a YO-Yoer. The second best way is from Instructional Videos and the hardest way (at least to learn tricks) is from a book.
Now many people do not have another Yoer around and some do not have video tape players. Then what? Books and magazines.
There are several Periodicals now available for the YO-YO Enthusiast. I will list them below:
YO-YO Times
YO-YO Times was around before me and many of the current players. It is a great newsletter that provides loads of information and new tricks. Always printed on Canary Yellow paper you know immediately when it arrives in your mail box. For more information contact:

Tri-Flow Hysteria
By: Bill deBoisblanc -AYYA Board
(The following article does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the AYYA. The AYYA neither recommends nor promotes the use of potentially toxic substances for yo-yo lubrication)
I have done some limited research that convinces me that Tri-Flow Lubricants are as safe as most similar products. A review of the MSDS sheets for many other products you find around the house including your fluoride tooth paste, Joy liquid detergent, Liquid Paper and certainly most all other lubricants for automobiles and bikes would lead one to
believe these products should also be listed on the II Yo-Yo Web news (ed. note: Infinite Illusions Web Board at
www.yoyoing.com/news/index.shtml) as toxic. If you want to get educated on the relative risks associated with common household items from aspirin to Castrol 10-50 motor oil go to some of the MSDS web sites and check them out for yourself. However, don't get hysterical when you see that some things you ingest daily like toothpaste and soft drinks have known animal carcinogens in them.
When using any grease or oil lubricants and hundreds of other products it is certainly wise, if not good hygiene, to wash your hands after use. If you don't like the odor of Tri-Flow Grease or oil, because it makes you sick, by all means
don't use the stuff. The oil is more volatile so it should be used in a well-ventilated space if you are concerned that even a short-term exposure while oiling a bearing is a danger to your health.
The hysteria over the "risk" associated with exposures to Tri-Flow Lubricants while lubing a yo-yo bearing is ridiculous and represents a classic example of well
meaning but untrained people interpreting a document they don't fully understand. First of all the referenced MSDS (ref: ) posted on the II Web Board is for another Tri-Flow product "Liquid, Formula M050727" and is not for either the grease or oil lubricant that are sold at bike shops. The correct MSDS for the TRI-FLOW SUPERIOR LUBRICATION with TEFLON oil that comes in the 2 oz. squeeze bottles can be found at: http://www.siri.uvm.edu/msds/h/q360/q276.html.
This product appears to be much less hazardous and the MSDS indicates the only route of entry that poses a health hazard is from "Ingestion". I could not find the MSDS for the Tri-Flow grease on the Internet so I contacted the manufacturer, Sherwin-Williams Minwax Division, and was faxed a copy. Although FLEX-T no longer markets the stuff now, its old web site is still up at . This site is worth visiting since it gives the part numbers for both the oil (21010) and grease (23001) that are helpful in figuring
out which MSDS goes with what product. Sherwin-Williams has maintained these part numbers for these products. If you want copies of the MSDS's from Sherwin-Williams contact them directly at (216) 566-2902 or send me a self-address and stamped envelope and I will send you copies of each.
The purpose of a Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS) is to evaluate the risks of exposure to this material in a worst case industrial setting such as manufacturing, cleaning up a spill or putting out a fire. For some of the items, it assumes exposures of 8 hours a day 40 hours a week. The level of risk reported is often is elevated whenever products are heated during manufacturing, mixing, blending or packaging since the vapors can be aspirated into the lungs. Since the Tri-Flow grease does not vaporize until it is heated to over 700 degrees F, dangerous
fumes should not be a problem while lubing your yo-yo. An MSDS document simply can not be used to determine the risk associated with the prudent use of a product by a consumer.
Although I'm not a toxicologist, I have worked with MSDS documents for over 25 years in my day job with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District in San Francisco and have used them to evaluate the relative toxicity of solvent formulations. This limited experience does not qualify me to interpret the details of these documents. However, I have a Ph.D. toxicologist on my staff who has reviewed the MSDS for Tri-Flow Lubricant-Liquid, Formula M050727 and she has concluded that in normal use this material is not very toxic and normal precautions should minimize any risk from its use. Note that I had her look at the MSDS for the wrong product, thanks to Steve's error, not the considerably less toxic product that is sold in stores.
The MSDS for both the oil and grease that are being used to lube bikes and yo-yos do not list any data for rat kills so let's assume, probably incorrectly, that all
the Tri-Flow products have a similar toxicity as does Formula M050727. The MSDS indicates that the LD50-LC50 (i.e. the lethal dose where more than half the rats die) is something greater than 5 grams per kilogram of body weight. This is a huge dose, according to the toxicologist, and the "greater than 5 grams" means, in her opinion, that few if any and certainly no where near half, of the rats died after being force fed the equivalent of a 110 pound (50 kg.) THP kid eating 2.5 tubes of Tri-Flow Grease at one siting. For me it would be 4.25 tubes, yum yum.
Now lets compare the MSDS for Tri-Flow
product, Formula M050727, with those for Colgate Tooth Paste, Liquid Paper Correction Fluid and Windex Glass Cleaner. All of these products are listed as having a Chronic Hazard (long term); Slight Acute Hazards (short-term) and all recommend Eye, Skin and Respiratory protection while handling. So before you brush your teeth tonight be sure to wear your goggles, a long sleeve shirt, and a respirator. Obviously these MSDS warnings are for handling these products while they are hot and volatile, under pressure, on fire, or in some other adverse industrial situation. They are not evaluating the risk of applying a drop of the oil or a small dab of grease to a yo-yo bearing. Note that Colgate toothpaste not only contains fluoride but also sodium Saccharin, a listed an animal carcinogen with a LD-LC50 of 0.886 grams and a kill rate of 94% of the rats exposed. Liquid paper contains Methyl Chloroform a suspected carcinogen. Tri-Flow lubricants contains no known carcinogens and have no known LD-LC50 level since they stopped at 5 grams per kilogram since it is inhumane to give the rats a higher dose. The primary odor of Tri-Flow grease and oil comes from the N-Amyl Acetate that is added. Sounds like pretty bad stuff but it is artificial banana oil and it is added to some food products for flavoring and to other common household products including fingernail polish and leather polishes as a fragrance.
If you can believe those MSDS sheets for the actual Tri-Flow products being used to lube yo-yo bearings: 1.) Part No. 23001 Tri-Flow High Performance Lithium Grease with Teflon, and 2.) Part No. 21010 Tri-Flow Superior Lubrication with Teflon they appear to be much less
hazardous and pose only a minimal danger not unlike hundreds of other household and automotive products that are in everyday use.
In conclusion, since Tri-Flow lubricants are chemicals you should minimize your exposure to them by taking reasonable precautions such as washing your hands after use. When applying the Tri-Flow oil
do so in a well-ventilated place especially if you have a pre-existing respiratory problem that might be aggravated.
The only real danger presented by both the Tri-Flow grease and oil products would be from ingesting them. So don't lick your fingers after lubing your bearings, wash them thoroughly and by all means keep these products out of the reach of children who might like the taste. This goes for the Drano, Liquid Paper, toothpaste, Windex and possibly peanut butter. Another safety tip. Don't mix products that contain chlorine with ones that have ammonia in them. Unfortunately, this is done everyday in many households and is a much more serious health threat than any problem the prudent use of Tri-Flow lubricants could possibly cause. I like to think that yo-yo players aren't stupid and that they would take normal precautions when handling any product like Tri-Flow that admittedly contains some dangerous compounds. By the way, if Vaseline Lip Therapy works for you by all means don't use the Tri-Flow products. In my humble opinion, the Tri-Flow products not only work but also are relatively safe unless you insist on eating mass quantities of the stuff.
Hi my name is Mikayla and I am doing a project on yo-yos in school. I was wondering if you can tell me the world champion for 1970, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, & 79 please. If you can't please e-mail me with a link I can use please. Thank You!!!
Lucky Meisenheimer responds:
I am not aware of a formal open world yo-yo championship being held during these years. Many individuals since the 1930s have claimed the title national or world yo-yo champion. Most never competed in any tournament it was just a title that the yo-yo company that they worked for bestowed upon them. In the 1930s almost all of Duncan's yo-yo demonstrators were called world champions. If two were working the same area one would be the national champ and the other the world champ.
If tournaments were conducted they were usually sponsored by a particular company and there were often restrictions on who could enter and the brand of yo-yo used.
The American Yo-Yo Association is the only player oriented organization that does not have ties to any particular Yo-Yo company. We have standardized tricks and rules for running tournaments so that there is consistency in all areas of the country. We are considered the governing body for yo-yo competitions.
We have tracked AYYA world records and National and World Champions since 1993. Although others may claim National and World titles the only ones that we recognize are the ones listed by the AYYA. Plenty of individuals may claim titles but if the title is not an AYYA title it carries little clout in most players minds.
Hello, My name is Gordon Grant, and live in Malvern, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. There are currently no yo-yo clubs or societies anywhere near my place of residency. I would like to invite anyone living in my residential area to please contact me so that a club could be started. I am an avid, inveterate, and experienced yo-yoer. Any helpful information concerning my aspirations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Surf331745@aol.com

Thank you very much for the great listing on the page. Guess it is good to have a state that's first in the USA Alphabetically with a city that begins with "B". We are really excited about our kickoff meeting next week. We are already in contact with various pros in the South east to come perform at our quarterly meetings. This has all been made possible because of the AYYA. Thank you very much. STEVE MrPiano24@aol.com

25 people competed in the contest.
The contest was held in State College, PA at the 100th Anniversary Volunteer Firefighters Carnival. There were a lot of people at the carnival and many other things to get involved with. We had good location a long the through way that allowed a lot of people to stop watch the yo-yo contest. Later in the day we moved to the main stage to finish the contest and have Greg Clark did a demo for us. Due to the lack of a sound system Greg had to do his demo without music. Greg is truly one of the best yo-yoers in the area. After the main part of the contest was over we were still getting requests to enter the contest by kids that had come to the carnival a little too late. Luckily we had planned ahead for this situation and decided it would be good idea to run another competition using the Novice Division trick list based on the skill level of the late coming competitors. I wanted to make sure that every kid at the carnival had a chance to compete. The local news papers where there taking pictures, but it looks like they all but ignored the carnival in today's paper. One picture of the antique fire trucks and a lonely captioned. ;-(
I have to give a special thanks to Greg Clark and Roby Farmer. They both drove along way to come to my little contest. Roby driving 8hrs from North Carolina. Greg was generous enough to show off some of his free style moves on the main stage even with no music. I wish I could have spent more time hanging out and talking to them, but I was busy running the contest and helping kids learn the tricks for their divisions with my wife's help. Greg and Roby both went home with Team Tarkin Signature Series Yo-yos and some cool prizes from the contest. Roby taking home the Killer Bee.
I would also like to thank Fiend Magazine, Team Losi, Playmaxx, Yomega, Spintastics, Nittany Line Hobbies, and Team Tarkin for donating and sponsoring prizes for the contest. They all came up with some cool prizes and did more than was ever expected to help out with the contest. Everyone that was interested in yo-yoing was able to go home with one very cool magazine. Yes, Team Tarkin (with my money) did really donate a few cool prizes for the contest.
The great thing was that many of the kids at the contest even those that did not place took the time to thank my wife or me for doing this contest for them. One kid even tried to give me back the copy of Fiend he was given because he had decided not to compete and thought we were only giving them to competitors. You just don't see that kind of appreciation these days.
If things go well, I hope to do this again next year. It was well worth the effort.
Be sure to check out the pictures of the contest winners on my web site at www.geocities.com/Area51/Nebula/4771

2nd Quarterly Report
Collecting Committee and Records Committee Quarterly Reports:
Interest in the history of the yo-yo continues to be a hot topic and I have
fielded several requests over the last few months for information related to history and collecting. I have provided complementary copies of my book to
those needing historical information for articles they are working on. I have requested that they give a plug for the AYYA in their articles. Hopefully they will follow through on this request.
I have also started doing some local presentations on the history of the yo-yo and trick demonstrations. I include plugs for the AYYA and will be making membership applications available.
I am also nearing the completion of collectible yo-yo secondary market value
updates. This has been quite a project, which I have been aggressively working on for the last several weeks. I did not want to announce it until I knew it was reaching completion. Fiend Magazine will begin using this guide as a regular feature with a similar format to other price guide magazines. This will published in the fall issue prior to Chico. I have also been talking with some manufacturers about the possibility of promoting the collectible aspect of the yo-yo market. Barbie, GI Joe, Hot Wheels etc.... toys which pale in comparison to the rich history of the yo-yo have already recognized the financial benefit of developing a collectors market.
These companies have exploited it to such a level that a significant percentage of their sales comes straight from collectors. I think the yo-yo manufacturers are interested but right now with them being unable to fill current orders development of collectible lines are on a back burner.
I have published a listing of the 50 highest prices paid for yo-yos in the secondary market, which will be released in the current issue of Fiend Magazine. I will keep this listing updated on my web site in the future. Speaking of web sites I have been negligent in doing anything with our AYYA site on history and collecting. I don't want to duplicate what I am working on for my own site so I am in a bit a impasse right now.
Nationally the yo-yo has been getting good press. The Yo-Yo had 51 print references in April, 40 in May and 30+ in June. The AYYA had mentions in several of these articles, which is great. I expect a slight down turn in July and August with the summer slowdown but this might be counteracted by the Warp tour generating print publicity that the yo-yo would not otherwise be getting.
Records I have been notified of the following changes in the AYYA world records.
Ride the Horse (fixed axle - stock yo-yo and string) 110 Dale Oliver (listed originally as Dale Myrberg)
100 Meter Dash looping two yo-yos - 20.60 seconds Dale Oliver - 1996 World Yo-Yo Championships in Rapid City, SD
An Update from Lucky
Good news, we should have the world record certificates available in about 2 weeks. I am planning on handing out the certificates of the current world record holders at Chico. If anyone is setting on new world records submissions please get them in so I can have them before Nationals.
Good News, on the collecting front. There was a nice write up on collecting yo-yos in "Toy Shop" magazine one of the largest distributed toy collector publications. This was released on 8/13/99 with 3 full pages just on yo-yos. The AYYA got a nice plug with both address and web site. I wrote them a thank you note for recognizing our hobby and they published another short article on high prices being paid for yo-yos and some other comments again the AYYA was mentioned. The last issue of Yo-Yo World also had not one but two articles on Yo-Yo collecting both by Chris Cook. The next Fiend magazine will have a giant value update listing based on the yo-yos appearing in my book. YO-YOs continue to bring high prices at auction. We have a new entry in the top 5 highest prices paid list with a loose Duncan Space Seattilite Needle at $855.00 bumping the Cheerio Kitchener Buttons at $710.00 to the number 6 slot (yo-yos are making internet stocks look cheap).
Yo-Yo's had 38 citations in the National media for the month of July which is good for a summer month. The largest number of citations were from the release of the e-Yo at 5. The AYYA had one mention but no address or way to get in touch. For comparison Fiend Magazine and Yo-Yo World each had one mention and there were no articles on collecting.
Jim Johnson
2nd Quarterly Report
Revised Application - most of my time has been spent on rearranging and adding color to the existing application. This application will be available on the internet very soon. I have completed a letter to the manufacturers but have only sent it to a couple with no response so far. I have sent letters and applications to old Duncan Yo-yo pros and have had little success reaching them as well.
Have sent articles to Yo-yo World and several newspapers within Louisiana. Most of those were favorable.
Bob Bowden
2nd Quarterly Report
My time on the AYYA Board of Directors for the second quarter was actually measured in days due to my appointment to the board near the end of the quarter. Responsibilities include gathering and editing materials for the AYYA newsletter. I can be reached by e-mail at bobb@intergate.bc.ca
Valerie Krantz, Secretary AYYA
2nd Quarterly Report
During the 2nd quarter of 1999, Secretarial duties included:
- Tally of board member votes on the following xxx issues. The summary of these votes was provided to all AYYA board members via email shortly after the counts was completed.
Continuing to promote yo-yoing and the AYYA itself, I organized and judged three contests following AYYA rules in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas in the 2nd quarter of 1999. Yo-yo activity remains high in the DFW area, as well as around the state of Texas. The Lone Star Spinners Yo-Yo Club now meets twice a month at the Valley View Mall in Dallas.
604 AYYA renewal notices were hand-addressed and mailed during the 2nd quarter of 1999. These notices were sent to members currently up for renewal, as well as all past members who had previously let their AYYA memberships expire. Preliminary results show that this effort was beneficial in gaining additional membership renewals. Future AYYA member renewal notices will be sent in a timely manner on a quarterly basis, in an effort to keep members current and avoid missed newsletters. Modifications to the AYYA by-laws are in process to reflect these changes and will be included on the upcoming formalized revision of by-law's.
David Brunner, Treasurer AYYA
2nd Quarterly Report
My name is David Brunner and I am the newly elected Treasurer of the AYYA effective May 1999.
It is my pleasure to hold this position as I am a strong supporter of YO-YOs, Yo-yo clubs, competitions and the further development of the sport/hobby.
I have had experience as Treasurer with other clubs in the Florida area and was able to step right into the position with ease. John Stangle and the rest of the board have been highly supportive of the changes and made the transition easy for me. The AYYA is standing on good ground. With the implementation of the new application and membership choices, I feel the AYYA will be able to provide more services for its members. Many neat and exciting things are in the works for the membership and we all should be happy with the future of the AYYA.
The membership rosters and accounting are all done on computer, which makes reporting on the status of the funds easy for everyone to follow.
I hope everyone remembers to submit their renewals promptly and I will process your applications as soon as possible to get you your information.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at Bandit@iol14.com
Steve Brown
2nd Quarterly Report
I have been working on setting up parameters for an AYYA Club. I have been working on price quotes for a special AYYA yo-yo...not just a current model with our logo, but a new model altogether.. something unique to the AYYA. I have also spoken with several stores and on-line vendors in an attempt to secure a discount for AYYA club members. As I have been out of town for the last 6 weeks, I need to more or less start the whole process over, but everyone I have spoken to has been very receptive to the idea of providing AYYA club members with discounts on yo-yos and accessories. I am also trying to coordinate some kind of special package for exceptional stores to sell AYYA Club memberships through their storefronts. The details still need to be worked out, but again, everyone I have spoken to seems excited about the project.
That's about all for now....more details as I have them.
Bill deBoisblanc - Board Member
2nd Quarterly Report
During the second quarter of 1999 eight more contests were sanctioned by the AYYA bringing the total for the year to 16. The process still needs to be clarified and perhaps simplified since sanctioning fell through on another five or six contests for various reasons.
The biggest disappointment was the failure to sanction the National Championships. Both John Stangle and I tried unsuccessfully to convince Bob Malowney that sanctioning would enhance the credibility of this prestigious
event. Nevertheless, the AYYA will continue to recognize the winners of this contest as the National Champions.
The contests that were sanctioned are listed below.
Spin City II Yo-Yo Contest
Yo-Yo Madness Yo-Yo Contest
1999 Michigan State Yo-Yo Championships
1999 Champion Spinners Yo-Yo
Family Museum Yo-Yo Contest
1999 Midwest Regional's
Moorpark Party Shop 1st Annual Yo-yo Contest
Revival of the Arts Yo-Yo Competition
Note: (added to report on 9/99 - additional events to appear in Bill's 3rd Quarterly Report in the December Newsletter).
1999 International YO-YO Championships
1999 World YO-YO Championships
1999 4th Annual California State YO-YO Championships
1999 5th Annual West Coast Regional YO-YO Championships
One change was made administratively to the beginner division trick list. A "Gravity Pull Off" is now the suggested tiebreaker if the contest is organized to recognize a winner of this division.
In addition, six more contests have already been sanctioned during the third quarter of the year. Details on these contests will appear in the next quarterly report.

James Johnson
My name is James E. "Jim" Johnson. I am submitting this application for re-election on the Board of Directors of the American Yo-Yo Association for the following reasons. I am 53 years old and my love of the sport of yo-yoing spans over 4 decades. From a young child I was fascinated with the sport and as a result appeared on local television shows demonstrating my "ability." Through the years my continued obsession with this sport never "yo-yo'd"!
Some of the best and interesting parts of my life have been involved in the sport of yo-yoing, from doing it for pleasure, doing it for competition and meeting new and fun people along the way.
In addition to my consuming passion for this sport, I offer the following accomplishments for nomination for this position.
Trained by Dale Oliver, Wayne Lunberg, Barney Acker, Gus Sommer, Bill deBoisblanc, and Kids I've trained
1950s- City of Baton Rouge Champion;
1950s- State of Louisiana Champion;
1990s- Ranked 4th & 5th in the nation; Yo-Yo instructor for over 10 years; Hold yo-yo clinics for Scouts, youth groups, church groups, company picnics, birthday parties and anywhere else groups of people want to learn; on the AYYA Board of Directors since 1993.
Present freelance yo-er for various yo-yo manufacturers; Thank you for your consideration of this application and I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue my love of yo-yoing by service to this association in the continued advancement of this sport.
Nicholas R. VanDerSchie
I study economics and mathematics Kalamazoo college. I like computers, star wars (minus the gungans), and skateboards. During the summer I yo-yo professionally. This past summer I toured with Henrys on the Fiend North American Yo-Yo Tour and last summer with Yomega and Team High Performance (THP). I'm also the 1998 and 1999 Michigan State YO-YO Champion. My 70+ trick CD-ROM, yoyomaze, debuts this fall.
Joseph W. Mitchell Jr.
I am a yo-yo retailer in Wilmington, Delaware. We have sold yo-yo's at my family's store since my grandfather opened our store back in July of 1953. We had the original Duncan demonstrators come to our store back in the fifties and carve yo-yos for the kids who purchased them!! (My dad still has his around somewhere!). We were the official Philly area co-sponsor of the Fiend Magazine Tour. We have also hosted two contests over the past two years (including 'Yo Back to Skool' - September 18)
Personal: I am 33 years old, married and have one child (he's two and has perfected the thow-down....sorta). I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Marketing from the University of Delaware in June of 1989. I have worked at my family's store since graduating from college with duties ranging from overseeing day-to-day operations to all marketing (including creation and maintenance of our web page (www.mitchells.com) I have served as the Communications Director, on the Board of Directors of the Brandywine Little League in Wilmington since 1993. My duties with the Little League include production of the league's annual 'Yearbook' - a 50 page booklet with dozens of pictures, articles and ads. I also coached in the 13-15 year old division for three seasons.
I just joined the AYYA and wanna make a difference in the future of our wonderful sport. I think there's lots of future in yo-yoing and love the inroads made over the past several years at reaching our huge potential group. I think the Fiend Tour was a great idea, and love the evolution of contests like the nationals in Chico. What I don't like is the partisanship that has developed between some factions of the yo-yoing community. I think it should be our duty to bring together the yo-yoing community into one group, including all manufacturers, retailers and players.
YO-YO Times optional Subscriptions
by: John Stangle - AYYA President
The YO-YO Times (A World of Fun on a String for Children of All Ages) is in many YO-YO Players collections around the world and has been offered as an additional option when joining the AYYA since it's existence on application forms.
YO-YO Times is written by Mr. Stuart Crump with help from family and friends. You can always tell when it arrives in your mail box as it is always printed on canary yellow paper and is very recognizable through all the other mail. I can't wait to get in the house and carefully take the staples out so I can read it (don't want to tear it as I collect each copy since I started my subscription).
The YO-YO Times is always full of interesting articles, results, manufacturer and retailers advertisements, upcoming contest information, tips, tricks and so much more. YO-YO Times is also on line. You can visit their web site at ww
